2012 Summer Nationals Moved to Anaheim

2012 Summer Nationals will be in Anaheim, CA, instead of Dallas. For those of us in the WWD, that should mean cheaper flights and no time zone change!

See the story here.

WWD Officers Meeting

The next WWD officer's meeting will be on Wednesday, January 4, at 6:30pm, at the Eastlake Grill. All division members are welcome to attend.

If you are planning to attend, it would be great if you would drop Dan a line at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so we could make sure to get a big enough table!

Parking

The parking lot accross the street from Salle Auriol (south side of the street) is a pay lot, but parking there is free if you have a SAS parking permit. Permits will be available just inside the venue and should be placed on your car's dashboard.

On Saturday, street parking is metered.  Street parking is free on Sunday.

Live Results Online!

Live Results for the event will be published online throughout the weekend (if our internet connection is stable.)  They can be viewed at http://www.wwdfencing.org/LiveResults/LAO11.

Check-in

Upon ariving at the venue, please check the posted seeding list to verify your name is listed and that the information (club affiliation, division, weapon classifications, etc.) is correct. You can also check this information online using the Live Results link above.  Report any errors when you get to the check-in desk.

The check-in desk will open 30 minutes prior to the close of registration.  Please do not ask to check in outside of those times.  You must check in each day that you are fencing.  Checking in should be the first thing you do when you arrive.  Do not start warming up, getting equipment checked, etc. until you have checked in.  If you are not checked in by the close of registration, you may not be allowed to fence.

Waiver Form

Please download and complete the waiver form if you have not already done so.  This signed form will be required of all competitors.  Minors (under age 18) must have a parent or guardian sign the form.

Equipment Check

After checking in, please proceed to the equipment check to have your masks, lames, and bodycords tested.  Please plan to arrive at the venue with enough time to get your equipment checked.  If you are fencing on Sunday, it is highly recommended that you get your equipment checked on Saturday in order to avoid the Sunday morning rush.

Foil Masks

The USFA has NOT adopted the electric foil mask bibs, so you do not need a new mask to fence in this event.  If you have a mask with an electric bib, you may use it if you wish, but you may not apply tape to the outer surface of the mask to cover the lame material (this is for safety reasons.)  Also, be aware that rule t.54(c) states: "If a fencer's equipment does not conform to the provisions of Articles m.27 and m.28, a touch made off the target which is registered by the apparatus as valid will not be annulled."

Close of Registration

We will be closing registration for each event PROMPTLY at the published time.  After closing registration, we will call the names of those not present and give them one minute to check-in.  After scratching those who do not report, we will begin seeding the event and forming the pools.  If you arrive after the pools have been generated, you WILL NOT be allowed to fence UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

If you are coming from out of the area and are running late, call (206) 719-5026 to let us know that you are on your way.  Depending on the circumstances, we may be willing to seed you into the pools and you can catch up when you arrive.

USFA Membership

We have verified the USFA membership status of all registered fencers using the information poseted today on the USFA website.  If you are not currently a member of the USFA, it means you need to join or renew your USFA membership.  You can do this one of two ways:

  1. Renew online at https://www.railstation.org/usfencing/MembershipRegistration.aspx.  If you choose this option, please print out your renewal receipt and present it as proof of membership when you check-in.
  2. Print out the USFA membership form, fill it out, and turn it in when you check-in. The membership form is located here:  http://assets.usoc.org/assets/documents/attached_file/filename/44701/2011-12_Individual_Membership_Application.pdf.

Event-specific Information

Here are our estimates for how each event will run:

  • Mixed Saber, Saturday at 9:00am (15 fencers registered): We will start fencing at 9:15am and finish around noon.
  • Women's Foil, Saturday at 9:00am (17 fencers registered): We will start fencing the women's foil event at 9:15am.  I estimate the event will be complete around 1:30 pm.
  • Mixed Epee, Saturday at Noon (55 fencers registered): The epee event will start fencing by 12:30pm and should be finished by about 6pm.
  • Women's Saber, Saturday at 3:00pm (10 fencers registered): We will start fencing immediatly at 3:00pm and finish by 5:30pm if not earlier. Since 10 fencers lends itself to pools of five, we will probably fence two rounds of pools (of 5) so that you get more fencing in (a giant pool of 10 is a bit too much.)  The combined results of the two pool rounds will seed the DEs.
  • Mixed Foil, Sunday at 9:00am (53 fencers registered): Fencing will start no later than 9:30am.  If all goes as planned, the final bout will finish around 2:45pm.
  • Women's Epee, Sunday at Noon (28 fencers registered): We will start fencing at 12:30pm and finish around 5:15pm.

Other Information

Food and drinks will NOT be available at the venue, so please plan accordingly.

An athletic trainer will be on-site throughout the weekend to assist with any medical needs.

Visor Masks Banned

The USFA and FIE have banned visor masks from all foil and epee events until further notice. This is because of an incident which occured a few months ago where a blade punctured the lexan visor resulting in an injury to the fencer. See this story for more information.

Effective immediately, visor masks are banned from use in ALL foil and epee events held in the Western WA Division. While the visor masks are still allowed in saber, we strongly encourage saber fencers to also cease using these masks. All fencers are also encouraged to not use these masks in practice until the FIE and USFA make a final evaluation as to their safety.
